Brain Dump

  •  L’Amour, Les Baguettes, Paris

     L’Amour, Les Baguettes, Paris

I know I promised to write more, but life gets in the way of writing frequently. Though the hands and mind itch to write, hours blend into days, and soon, a week has gone by.

As promised, I am continuing with freewriting, because I think this is what I do best. Please, have a seat.

If you watch the TV series, “Emily in Paris,” you would know that people have mixed opinions about the TV series. Myself included. However, I love watching it mostly because I think it has a good mix of English and French. I’ve always loved reading about France and Paris, and I was close to visiting the country once upon a time. The urge to visit is simply stronger this year.

I’ve been content to read novels of Paris and still hope that one day I can visit.

In the meantime, I heard this song while working at a cafe, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. The first time I heard it, Shazam (music recognition) was not able to “listen” properly. Until I went to the cafe a third time. I simply fell in love with the song. I’ve been playing it daily as a mood booster.

I told Mr. S that this song reminds me so much of the Tinker Bell movie – the first one. I don’t know which particular song sounds like this. Perhaps it is simply the whimsical nature of the song, or something. Regardless, it’s been on my playlist now.

While I listen to all kinds of music, I think I’m on this path of finding songs that are similar to “L’amour, Les Baguettes, Paris” by Stella Jang. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

    And that’s it for today.

I wonder if there are Asian Lit books that feature moving to France. LOL

  • Freewriting challenges

    Freewriting challenges

In an effort to encourage Little Miss to exercise her writing muscles, I have shared some freewriting prompts for her to use.

Unfortunately, the idea of freewriting and blogging is lost on her. She is nervous, hesitant, perhaps a tad bit anxious to bleed on the page – perhaps thinking that she would be criticized heavily. I promised to be kinder and less critical of what she writes. To prove this, I will also join the challenge so that my writing muscles are also stretched.

It has been too long since I wrote anything of substance.

In true freewriting and blogging form, I shall simply jot down what comes out of my stream of consciousness nary a concern for style, grammar, or form. Just a reminder,

Freewriting is a technique in which the author writes their thoughts quickly and continuously, without worrying about form, style, or even grammar. Alongside brainstorming, freewriting is typically used early in the writing process to collect and manifest one’s thoughts.

I figured that since nobody reads my blog anyway, this is just a good place for me to do brain dumps – as usual. 😉

    Hope you stick around.

  • The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella: A Review

The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella: A Review

The BurnoutThe Burnout by Sophie Kinsella
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a book that made me LOL. And this is one of those — but perhaps only in the earlier part of the book.

In my burnt out state, what happens in the initial sequence of things is totally relatable, and I want to honestly ask Sophie Kinsella if she is okay.

The rest of the book was a little challenging to go through, but I still had some laughs and some heartwarming moments. I encountered some lessons – or reminders – towards the end, which gave me a small boost.

If you’ve got your life together, then great. Sasha might annoy you, because the answers are definitely there. And yes, she should be stronger. But, if you’re in a state where you’d impulsively cut your hair or you have that desire to run for the mountains and away from everyone and everything, this book might cheer you up. 🙂

  • Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros: A Review

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros: A Review

    Summary:

Rebecca Yarros’s Iron Flame transports you into the heart of a world crackling with dragon fire and revolution. Violet, a reluctant dragon rider, returns to Basgiath War College after surviving a harrowing encounter with mythical monsters. But war brews on the horizon, fueled by secrets buried deep within the college’s walls. With her beloved dragon Tairn and the enigmatic Xaden by her side, Violet must navigate treacherous political landscapes, unravel arcane mysteries, and face the flames of a rebellion that could engulf the Empyrean itself.

    Review:

Iron Flame is a fast-paced, escapist fantasy that offers dragons, magic, and a healthy dose of romance. While the writing might not win any awards for lyrical prose, it knows how to weave a spellbinding narrative that keeps you turning pages like a possessed bibliophile. Yarros crafts a thrilling world, rich in lore and teeming with intriguing characters. You’ll find yourself cheering for Violet’s fiery spirit, swooning over Xaden’s mysterious charm, and even feeling a grudging respect for the cunning antagonist.

However, the novel isn’t without its flaws. Some passages could benefit from a tighter edit, and the character development, particularly for the supporting cast, feels a bit undercooked. But let’s be honest, when you’re soaring through the skies on a dragon’s back or dodging wyvern attacks, who has time to nitpick about adverbs?

Overall, Iron Flame is a fun, immersive read that delivers on its promise of action, adventure, and heart. It might not be your next literary masterpiece, but it’s the perfect escape hatch for anyone craving a good dose of fire-breathing fantasy. Just remember to pack your sunscreen – things get pretty hot in the Empyrean!

Verdict: Escape to a world of dragons and revolution with Iron Flame. Be prepared for some uneven writing, but get ready to be swept away by its thrilling plot and engaging characters. 3.5 out of 5 fireballs.

P.S. If you enjoy this, be sure to check out the first book in the series, Fourth Wing, for even more dragon-riding goodness!

  • Beyond Bestsellers: Curating Your Kindle on Stuff Your Kindle Day December 2023

Beyond Bestsellers: Curating Your Kindle on Stuff Your Kindle Day December 2023

December chill hangs heavy in Cambodia and I am all for hiding under the covers with a good book. Did I miss my Goodreads mark this year? Yessiree! But I’ve been on a reading slump, so I am excused.

Sometimes, the books that make it to the bestseller lists don’t really hit the spot the way they used to. Or I am getting a bit older. Nevertheless, I chanced upon something called Stuff Your Kindle Day a few months ago on TikTok and was a bit bummed that I missed it. Luckily, apparently there is another Stuff Your Kindle Day on December 27, 2023, and I am just getting ready.

It’s a day to ditch the “must-read” pressure and rediscover the thrill of serendipity, of foraging for hidden gems amongst the endless aisles of the Kindleverse.

I remember when I was younger, my friends and I would visit this old vintage bookstore where we could discover hidden gems and little known authors. This time, its a digital version of sorts. And if I came home with 10 books for 100 Philippine pesos at one point, I am sure to have more with this online version.

Here are some tips on how you can prepare if you want to try the Stuff Your Kindle Day feast:

    • Declutter your digital shelves: Cull finished titles, rearrange categories, and make room for new voices to sing. Purge the ghosts of past reads to welcome the whispers of future adventures.
    • Craft a wishlist: Jot down titles that tickle your current fancy, an author you’ve been meaning to explore, or a genre that begs for investigation. This isn’t a shopping list, but a compass for navigating the literary landscape.
    • Tech TLC: Ensure your Kindle’s software is sprightly, its internet connection humming. Download hiccups are literary buzzkills, so nip them in the bud!

    Just go for it!

When midnight paints the sky on December 27th, embark on your digital book treasure hunt. Remember, this isn’t a sprint for bestseller gold, but a leisurely amble through hidden alleyways and forgotten corners.

    • Genre Groves: Wander through whispering woods of mysteries, sun-dappled meadows of romance, or starlit expanses of science fiction. Let your mood be your guide, and don’t shy away from venturing off the well-trodden path. You might stumble upon a voice that will change your worldview.
    • Seek the Under the Radar Treasures: While familiar names might gleam like polished gems, don’t overlook the quieter corners. Often, the most transformative stories bloom in the shadows of established names. Keep an eye out for quirky titles, debut authors, and anything that ignites your literary curiosity.
    • Embrace the Unfamiliar: Shed the shackles of your comfort zone. A historical romp might ignite a hidden passion, while a quirky essay collection could offer unexpected wisdom. Remember, the most delightful surprises often lurk beyond the expected.

    Sharing the Literary Bounty

Once you have stuffed your Kindle and tried out new stories, its great to share the good finds in your blogs or on social media. Who knows? You might become the next person who discovers a story worth gold that is just hidden among the digital shelves.

Dive into the vast ocean of words, and allow yourself to be carried away by the magic of unexpected stories. I look forward to discovering new things with you.

Create Happiness: A Guide to Cultivating Joy in Your Life

Happiness, often described as a state of contentment, well-being, and joy, is a universal aspiration. We all want to experience those moments of sheer delight, but what does happiness truly look like, and how can we create it in our lives? In this article, we’ll explore the essence of happiness, common reasons for its elusiveness, and practical tips to start cultivating it.

    What Is Happiness?

Happiness is a multifaceted emotion, encompassing feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and overall well-being. It’s that warm, fuzzy sensation that washes over you when you’re doing something you love, connecting with loved ones, or achieving a personal goal. While it can be elusive, happiness is not an unattainable treasure; it’s a state of mind and heart that we can intentionally cultivate.

    What Happiness Looks Like

Happiness takes on various forms, and its appearance is unique to each individual. For some, it’s a radiant smile after a great workout; for others, it’s the laughter shared with friends over a cup of coffee. It can be found in the quiet moments of self-reflection or in the thrill of adventure. Essentially, happiness is a deeply personal experience that often involves positive emotions, a sense of fulfillment, and a feeling of inner peace.

    Common Reasons for Losing Happiness

Despite our innate desire for happiness, there are several common reasons why it may slip through our fingers:

    1. Comparison Trap: Constantly comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and unhappiness.
    2. Excessive Stress: Overwhelming stress can overshadow happiness, making it challenging to focus on joy.
    3. Neglecting Self-Care: Ignoring your physical and emotional needs can lead to unhappiness and burnout.
    4. Unfulfilling Relationships: Toxic or unfulfilling relationships can drain your happiness.

    Tips to Start Finding Happiness

    1. Practice Gratitude: Regularly take time to acknowledge the things you’re grateful for; it can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life.
    2. Engage in Meaningful Activities: Pursue activities that align with your passions and values; they’re a direct path to happiness.
    3. Prioritize Self-Care: Nourish your body, mind, and soul with adequate sleep, a balanced diet, exercise, and relaxation.
    4. Build Supportive Relationships: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you on your journey to happiness.
    5. Live Mindfully: Practice mindfulness to savor the present moment, reduce stress, and enhance your overall well-being.
    6. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your ambitions into achievable steps, celebrating your progress along the way.
    7. Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with persistent unhappiness, consider therapy or counseling to explore the underlying causes.

Remember, happiness is not a constant state; it’s a journey filled with ups and downs. By implementing these strategies and consistently working on your well-being, you can create happiness as a lasting presence in your life. Embrace the pursuit of joy, and may your path be illuminated by the radiant light of your own contentment.

  • Embrace Your Authenticity: Unleash the Power Within

Embrace Your Authenticity: Unleash the Power Within

In a world that often tries to fit us into predefined boxes, there’s nothing more liberating and empowering than embracing your authentic self. Your journey to living authentically is a path to self-discovery, self-love, and unapologetic self-expression.

    1. Unveiling Your True Colors

Imagine a canvas splashed with vibrant colors, each stroke a reflection of your passions and dreams. Living authentically means allowing those colors to shine through in every aspect of your life. From the clothes you wear to the choices you make, let your authentic self be the masterpiece that captures attention and inspires awe.

    2. Casting Aside the Masks

It’s time to cast aside the masks you’ve worn to please others or fit societal expectations. Peel away those layers and stand proudly in your own skin. Embrace your quirks, your interests, and your unique voice. The world deserves to know the real you, unfiltered and unapologetic.

    3. Boldly Embracing Imperfection

Authenticity thrives in imperfection. It’s about acknowledging that nobody is flawless and celebrating the beauty in our flaws. By being open about your challenges and vulnerabilities, you not only embrace your own humanity but also create a safe space for others to do the same.

    4. Igniting the Spark of Self-Love

Living authentically is an act of self-love. It’s about nurturing the relationship you have with yourself, just as you would with a cherished friend. Treat yourself with kindness, honor your needs, and prioritize your well-being. As you grow in self-love, you radiate positivity that attracts others on a similar journey.

    5. Inspiring a Movement of Authenticity

Your choice to live authentically is more than just personal growth; it’s a movement that can inspire others to break free from the chains of conformity. Your story becomes a beacon of hope, showing that it’s possible to embrace who you are without fear. By living your truth, you encourage others to do the same.

So, let your authenticity be a force that transforms not only your life but also the lives of those around you. Embrace the journey, and remember: the world is enriched by the unique essence you bring to it. Your authenticity is your superpower – wield it boldly and watch as it lights up your path toward a brighter, more fulfilling future.

The Importance of Slowing Down: Why Women Need to Prioritize Self-Care

In today’s fast-paced world, women often feel pressure to juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, from work and family to social obligations and community involvement. However, the constant demands of modern life can take a toll on women’s physical and mental health, leading to exhaustion, burnout, and stress-related illnesses. That’s why it’s important for women to slow down and prioritize self-care.

    Physical Health

When women don’t slow down and take time for themselves, they can experience physical health issues related to stress. High blood pressure, heart disease, and chronic pain are just a few examples of conditions that can result from chronic stress. By slowing down and taking time to rest and recharge, women can reduce their risk of these and other stress-related health problems.

    Mental Health

The demands of modern life can also take a toll on women’s mental health. When women don’t slow down and take time for themselves, they can become overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. Slowing down can help women manage stress and prevent mental health problems. Activities like exercise, meditation, and spending time with friends can help women relax and recharge.

    Self-Care

Women are often caregivers for others, whether it’s children, aging parents, or partners. However, women also need to prioritize self-care. Slowing down and taking breaks is essential for women to recharge and avoid burnout. Self-care can include activities like exercise, reading, or simply taking a bubble bath.

    Work-Life Balance

Women often struggle to balance work and home responsibilities. Slowing down and taking breaks can help women manage their time and energy more effectively, leading to better work-life balance. When women prioritize self-care, they’re better equipped to handle the demands of work and family life.

    Creativity and Productivity

Slowing down can also boost creativity and productivity. When women take time to rest and reflect, they can come up with new ideas and solutions to problems. Taking breaks and slowing down can also help women avoid burnout and maintain high levels of productivity over the long term.

  • Why International Women’s Day is More Important Than National Men’s Day

Why International Women’s Day is More Important Than National Men’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year, while National Men’s Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. Both of these days are important in their own right, but there are several reasons why IWD is more important than National Men’s Day.

Firstly, International Women’s Day is a global celebration that highlights the achievements of women and raises awareness about the challenges they face. It is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made in advancing women’s rights and gender equality, while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done. In contrast, National Men’s Day tends to focus on issues specific to men, such as their health and well-being, and does not address the broader societal issues that affect women.

Secondly, International Women’s Day is a reminder that women still face significant barriers and discrimination in many parts of the world. Despite the progress that has been made, women continue to face inequality in areas such as education, employment, and political representation. IWD provides a platform for women to speak out about these issues and demand change, while also promoting solidarity and support among women around the world. National Men’s Day, on the other hand, does not address these broader issues of gender inequality and discrimination.

Thirdly, International Women’s Day serves as a call to action for individuals and organizations to work towards gender equality. It encourages people to take concrete steps towards creating a more just and equal society, such as supporting women’s organizations, advocating for policies that promote gender equality, and speaking out against sexism and discrimination. National Men’s Day, while important in raising awareness about men’s issues, does not have the same level of urgency or call to action.

In conclusion, International Women’s Day is a crucial reminder of the progress that has been made in advancing women’s rights, as well as the work that still needs to be done. It is a call to action for all of us to work towards a more just and equitable society, where women have the same opportunities as men. We can each take concrete steps to support gender equality, such as advocating for policies that promote equal pay, supporting women-led businesses and organizations, and speaking out against sexism and discrimination. By doing so, we can work towards a future where every woman is empowered to reach her full potential and contribute fully to society. Let us all take action today, and every day, to create a world where gender equality is the norm, not the exception.

  • 10 Ways to Start the Year Right

10 Ways to Start the Year Right

You’re eager to get the new year off to a great start because it’s a brand-new year.

You commit yourself that this will be the year that you grow your company or improve professionally. You make a list of resolutions and then get started!

But before you know it, you’re back to carrying out your routine in the same manner and reaping the same results.

So what can you do to maintain your course and accomplish your objectives? Here are some pointers to get you moving and make this your finest year yet!

my secret plan to rule the world book
Photo by Ann H on Pexels.com
    1. Make a plan. Once you’ve decided on your objective(s), move backward from there so you can see exactly what has to be done to reach your destination.
    2. Establish attainable and precise objectives. Making your aim unachievable is the best way to ensure failure. Be selective when creating your goals. It is preferable to advance one item a mile than ten things an inch.
    3. Compile a list of new abilities you’ll need. To advance in your profession or keep up with the times in your industry, you’ll probably require new skills. Make a list of the talents you’ll need to acquire this year and devise a plan for achieving them.
    4. Steer clear of repeating prior mistakes. Continuing to act in the same manner after failing to obtain the desired consequences won’t alter the result. Instead, adopt a different strategy.
    5. Outline your objectives. Inform trusted friends, family members, and coworkers of your goals so they can be supportive.
    6. Ensure that your objectives are quantifiable. What is measured is accomplished. Keep a record of your accomplishments and treat yourself occasionally.
    7. Adjust your course as necessary. Do not be reluctant to change your route if you discover that you are going in the incorrect direction. Objectives are not fixed in stone. Changing your objectives as you go is acceptable.
    8. Maintain a healthy balance between work and recreation. Most of the time, our jobs and work come before a lot of other things in our lives. There is no stopping work. The most valuable asset you can accumulate is free time. Consider this before deciding to pursue your passion!
    9. Plan some time just for you. Set out some time on your calendar to get away and avoid distractions.
    10. Request assistance if things aren’t going as planned. Admitting that you need help is not a sign of shame.

Most of all, remember that it is okay to make mistakes and learn as you go. Here’s to fruitful and kickass new year!
